Professor Makoto Takizawa

Makoto Takizawa was born in Tokyo, Japan, on Dec. 6, 1950. He received his B.E. and M.E. degrees in Applied Physics from Tohoku University , Japan, in 1973 and 1975, respectively. He received his D.E. in Computer Science from Tohoku University in 1984.
From 1975 to 1986, he worked for Japan Information Processing Developing Center (JIPDEC) supported by the MITI (currently, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), Japan.

He is currently a full professor of the Department of Advanced Sciences, Hosei University since April of 2013. He was a full professor at the Department of Computers and Information Science, Seikei University since April of 2008 to March of 2013. He was a full professor of the Department of Computers and Systems Engineering, Tokyo Denki University (TDU) from 1986 to 2008. He was a dean of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Tokyo Denki University from April of 2001 to March of 2005. He was a director of Informations Division of TDU Research Institute for Technology from 1999 to 2001. He was a member of Board of Councilors of Tokyo Denki University from April of 2004 to March of 2007. He was a chair of Dept. of Information Science at the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Tokyo Denki University from 2006 to March of 2008.

From 1989 to 1990, he was a visiting professor of the GMD-IPSI (currently, Fraunhofer), Darmstadt, Germany. He is also a regular visiting professor of Department of Computer Science and DAKE Centre of Keele University, England since 1990. He is a visiting professor of Xidian Univ. and also an international advisor of Chinese Key State Lab. of ISN, Xidian University, X'ian, China since 2004.

He is a Golden Core member (2004- ) and now a Board of Governors (BoG) of IEEE Computer Society(2003-2005, 2006-2008) and also an international advisory committee member of TCDP(TC on Distributed Processing) of IEEE Computer Society. He is a senior member of IEEE.
He was a vice-chair of communication networks and protocols area in the IEEE 14th International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS-14) held in Poznan, 1994, and ICDCS-2000 held in Taipei, 2000. He was a program co-chair of IEEE ICDCS-18 held in Amsterdam, 1998. He organized successful five workshops at ICDCS-2001, Phoenix, as the workshop chair in 2001 and was also a workshop chair of ICDCS-2004, Tokyo. He was a general co-chair of IEEE ICDCS-2002 held in Vienna, 2002. He was a workshop co-chair of ICPP, Aizu 1998. He was a program chair of IEEE ICPADS-2000, Tokyo. He has been serving on program committees of many international conferences like ICPADS, ICOIN, ICNP, DEXA, ISORC, WORDS, SRDS, ICPP. He was a program co-chair and general co-chair of IEEE International Symposium on Object-oriented Real-time distributed Computing (ISORC), 2002 and 2003, respectively. He is a founder and steering committee chair of IEEE International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA). He was a general co-chair of the IEEE 17th AINA (AINA-2003), X'ian, 2003. He was a program co-chair of the 15th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA 2004), Zaragoza, Spain, 2004. He was a general co-chair of IEEE AINA-2005, Taipei, 2005, and IEEE ICPADS-2005 held in Fukuoka, Japan, 2005. He was a workshop co-chair of ICDCS2006, Lisboa, Portugal and is warking for ICDCS2008, Beijing, as a workshop co-chair. He is an editor of International Journal of Science and Engineering (IJSE) and many international journals.

He won the best paper award at the IEEE 4th International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems (ICPADS), 1996, and the best paper awards at IEEE ICOIN-9, 1994 and ICOIN-12, 1998. He also won the best paper award of International Conference on Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMS), 2001. He won the excellent paper award at the IEEE 18th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA-2004), 2004. He received appreciation certificates from IEEE Computer Society in 2001, 2002, and 2004. He won the best paper award at the IEEE 11th International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems (ICPADS2005), Fukuoka, 2005. He won the JNTO Best International Convention Award on Dec. 2008. He won the best paper award at CISIS-2014, Birmingham, UK.

He was a chair of IPSJ (Information Processing Society of Japan) SIGDPS (Distributed Processing) in Japan from 1997 to March of 2000. He was a member of the executive board of IPSJ from May of 1998 to April of 2001. He is an IPSJ fellow. He received the IPJS Activity Contribution Award in 2004.

He worked for the packet-switching network JIPNET from 1975 to 1976 at JIPDEC, which was the first packet-switched network in Japan. Then, he developed the first heterogeneous distributed database system JDDBS in Japan as a project leader and manager from 1976 to 1986 at JIPDEC. In JDDBS, relational database systems and CODASYL database systems distributed in JIPNET and local area network (LAN) are integrated. After joining Tokyo Denki University in 1986, he has been doing research on many significant areas of distributed systems based on networks and database systems technologies, group communication protocols, multimedia communication and systems, and information security.

He has so far published 161 journal papers including IEEE Systems Journal, IEEE Transactions on IE, IEEE Transactions on IZ, ACM Transactions on AAS, and 530 international conference papers including IEEE AINA and IEEE ICDCS. His research interest includes eco distributed systems, high-speed communication protocols, group communication protocols, distributed object systems, distributed database systems, distributed transaction management, fault-tolerant distributed systems, distributed systems security, role-based access control, transactional mobile agent systems, and peer-to-peer (P2P) systems.

He is a member of IEEE, ACM, and IPSJ.
